Stan became coach of the St Kilda Football Club in 1994.

In 1996 he took the team to the finals of the AFL Ansett Australia Cup, beating the unstoppable Carlton in the final.

In 1997, St. Kilda finished top of the ladder and played in the 1997 Grand Final, their first in 26 years.

These victories earned Stan the AFL Coach of the Year award.
